In a nutshell: Nvidia is rolling out a new beta version of its app tomorrow that should appeal to those who like to overclock their GPUs – without worrying about voiding the warranty – and record their gameplay. The company is also giving away rewards to users, including three months of free Game Pass for PC access.
The Nvidia app's initial beta release arrived in February as a way to unite its Control Panel, GeForce Experience and RTX Experience into one unified experience. A new update for the app arrives tomorrow (June 4) at 3am PT, bringing with it some interesting new features.
Update: The latest version of the Nvidia app is now available for download here.
The first change is the introduction of support for AV1 SDR and HDR video encoding. The update improves encoding efficiency by 40% on RTX 40-series graphics cards, producing higher-quality videos without requiring more disk space.
Nvidia notes that storage savings made when recording multi-player matches and single-player walkthroughs are substantial, and recording footage to the same drive that the game is loaded from can ease I/O-related stutters and accelerate load times.
The update gives gamers the option to record at 120 fps. The option is available for all codecs, and RTX 4000-series owners can record at AV1, offering higher-quality, smoother game captures than H.264 at the same bit rates.
The other headline feature coming to the Nvidia app is one-click automatic GPU tuning. Owners of RTX desktop cards will be able to have their systems' performance characteristics scanned and be offered profiles that optimize GPU performance.
Users can adjust voltage, power, temperature and fan speed targets, which will change the parameters used by the tuning algorithms. One example is setting a temperature threshold or maximum fan speed while still maximizing performance.
The app also performs regular checkup scans to ensure the best tuning profile is enabled.
One-click overclocking is offered by other software such as MSI Afterburner, which uses Nvidia OC Scanner tech. Nvidia notes that using Automatic Tuning in its app will not damage your GPU or invalidate its warranty.
Other features in the Nvidia app update include a redesign of the in-game overlay. Additionally, users get access to rewards, such as in-game content, exclusive GeForce Now premium membership offers, and more. Nvidia is also giving gamers three months of free access to PC Game Pass starting tomorrow.
